NEW ORLEANS — WWL-TV Meteorologist Dave Nussbaum

We will finally see a break in the heat today thanks to a “cold” front moving down from the north. This front will not cool us down, but it will help to set off scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms starting now through the evening. A few storms could be strong to possibly severe. The Storm Prediction Center has placed all of SE Louisiana in a Marginal Risk (Level 1 of 5) for severe weather. A few storms could have winds up to 60 mph. Heavy rain is also possible with any storm today, so watch out for some minor flooding issues from time to time. High temperatures will still be hot as they climb into the lower 90s before the storms develop. This is much better than the upper 90s we had on Tuesday. The storms will weaken tonight and we will be left with a few lingering spotty showers. Lows will be in the 70s.

The front will stall along the coast on Thursday and this will help to keep scattered showers and storms around the area.  However, the best chance for rain will be on the Southshore to the coast, or areas closest to the front. We will have more sunshine, so it will be hot with highs in the lower 90s.

The front will lift north and dissipate on Friday. This will give us a lower chance for rain with partly cloudy skies. High temperatures will climb back into the lower to mid 90s and it will feel like 103-108.

Weekend Forecast: We will return to a more typical mid-August weather pattern. A ridge of high pressure aloft with sit over us and it will be hot and humid with a daily chance for scattered afternoon/evening showers and storms. High temperatures will be in the lower 90s and it will feel like 100-105+.

Tropics: Thankfully, we do not have any tropical threats this week. The tropics are still quiet as dry, dusty air swirls over a huge part of the Atlantic Basin.

Forecast models are hinting at a tropical wave and low making it into the western Gulf from the Caribbean late next week. I’ll keep an eye on this trend to see if it continues.
