METAIRIE, La. — A train struck an SUV in Metairie Wednesday after the driver tried to go around the crossing gates at a railroad crossing, according to our partners at NOLA.com/The New Orleans Advocate.

JPSO says the driver’s injuries are not life threatening.

The crash occurred at the railroad crossing on Central Avenue near Heaslip Avenue around 3 p.m.

JPSO officials say the driver, a 49-year-old woman, tried to drive around the tracks as an Amtrak passenger train approached, according to the report. The train crashed into her SUV, sending her to the hospital.

No one aboard the train was injured according to JPSO.

Police said the driver will be cited for failure to yield.
